Introduction to Machining
If you would like to learn the art of machining, there’s still time to sign up for the Bridgeport and South Bend Studio course this month!
In this two day course we will cover the basics of using a Milling Machine and a Lathe to make precise parts, accurate to a thousandth of an inch, out of metal, plastic, or wood. You will learn to set up and safely operate the two most popular machines in the fab shop - “The Bridgeport” and “The South Bend.” And it’s easier than you think!
Please note: If you wish to use the Bridgeport, you will need to receive training and provide your own cutting tools!
This class will cover these requirements. Part of the cost goes towards a 10 piece set of end mills for you to keep. With this set you will be ready for a variety of machining projects!

Bridgeport and South Bend Studio

Some tiny milling and turning projects
Want to know how these were made? Sign up for the Bridgeport and South Bend Studio course and find out!
These objects were the result of one leisurely evening at the Fab Shop. I made them mostly for fun, but also as an example of what can be done on a milling machine and lathe.
Sign up for the Bridgeport and South Bend Studio course and you will learn the proper use of these tools and some basic machining skills to get you started working with metal.
Working on an electronics project with potentiometers? Don’t buy knobs, make your own! Don’t know what gift to buy that friend, relative, or coworker? Make them a turner’s cube, or a precision-milled puzzle! For those of you who attend the Metal Studio course or this class, you are also invited to attend a workshop where I will provide materials and guidance so you can make these things yourself.
When:
April 14th and 21st, 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Where:
Willoughby and Baltic Fab Shop
440 Somerville Ave
Somerville, MA 02144
Cost: $150 (includes your own set of end mills to keep)

TV-B-Gone Kit Building with Jimmie!

Come out and support the Willoughby and Baltic electronics lab with our second fund raising workshop! The first one allowed us to purchase an oscilloscope as well as some newer soldering irons and tools. Those who attended the first workshop will appreciate the better tools, which will also be more readily available this time around, and of much higher quality. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
This time we will be building the TV-B-Gone kit (http://www.ladyada.net/make/tvbgone/). With this, you will be able to turn off virtually any TV with the push of a button. The kit is much higher power than a standard TV-B-Gone, and in good conditions you can even turn televisions off from across the street.
Like the last kit, this is an easy first time project, so don’t be scared if you don’t know how to solder. We will provide all the tools and instruction you will need to put this together (as well as batteries, so you can leave with a working kit). If you’ve got a soldering iron at home, but never use it, then bring it and we’ll teach you how to use that as well. It will give you both a fun and useful project that you’ll use afterwards, and you’ll have a great time building it.
The last class sold out, so we are offering pre-registration this time. Since we have 20 kits, and we want to prevent crowding, we are splitting the workshop into two blocks of 10. This will also give more people better access to the good soldering irons and tools. We can also go out as a group afterwards and “test” the kits out in the Davis area. Please select the group number you want when signing up.
